This is a moderate route of approximately 5 miles, with some lovely woodland sections. From the carpark at East Tanfield Station, we cross the road to reach Tanfield Lea Marshes and follow the path on the eastern side of the nature reserve. We then walk up a short bank to reach the Consett to Sunderland railway path. We follow this for a short distance, SW, enjoying the views from this elevated track. We then turn off NW, towards Harperley and Pea Woods. This ancient woodland is small but beautiful. After a short walk along the Kyo Burn and back, we return in a NE direction, through the woods and back towards Tanfield Lea Nature Reserve. We follow the western path, close to the Houghwell Burn and back to the carpark. A lot of this walk is on good tracks and paths, however, there is some uneven terrain and some overgrown sections on the Tanfield Marshes.
After the walk, refreshments will be available at the East Tanfield Station cafe, next to the carpark.
