Starting from Tarr Steps public car park we head north east, turning off north west just before the hamlet of Liscombe in the direction of Knaplock. From here we head off north east, hugging the field boundary in the direction of Winsford Hill, the highest point in the area at 428 metres. We cross over the B3223 and again head in a northerly direction along the top edge of The Punchbowl with its dramatic views in the direction of Withycombe.
After walking through Withycombe Farm in an easterly direction, we again head in a northerly direction out of the village of Winsford keeping close to the River Exe on our right. We get to Kemps and walk next to the river again towards East and West Nethercote, crossing a bridge over a ford and then ascending Room Hill to meet up with the Exe Valley Way. We cross Room Hill Road and head east towards Withypool. We then take the Two Moors Way south of Withypool, this time tracing the route of the River Barle though open and wooded sections, passing through Tarr Steps Woodland National Nature Reserve and arriving at Tarr Steps, a short walk from the public car park.
Although graded as strenuous, the walk is generally moderate with some strenuous sections within the overall mileage. If people would like to eat after the walk, then Dulverton offers some good possible venues. When travelling to Tarr Steps public car park be sure to take a route via Dulverton. Beware of sat navs as they may route you to the wrong side of the Steps!
The public car park at Tarr Steps has toilets and a pay and display (which accepts bank cards)
