A flat walk at moderate pace from Shoeburyness along the Thames Estuary to make the most of the weekday Senior Rover ticket on the C2C line (£7 for over 65s or over 60s with a Senior Railcard). Starting from Shoeburyness with its military history, then walking through the seaside town of Southend to old Leigh with its fishing boats and finally taking a long wide open path beside the estuary beneath Hadleigh castle. Mix of pavements, hard surfaces and some grass. No/little mud up to Leigh but the last stretch from Leigh to Benfleet is currently wet and muddy. Wear boots and consider poles/gaiters if you're doing the full walk.
Options to walk approx 4 miles (Southend Central station), 8 miles (Leigh on Sea station) or 11.5 miles (finish at Benfleet station). Stop for lunch at Southend (choice of cafes/fish and chip shops/picnic) and tea/drink at Leigh on Sea.
Toilets on platforms 2 and 3 at Shoeburyness station and along the front (though some may be closed for the winter).
Catch 09:49 train from Fenchurch Street station (or 09:58 from West Ham) arriving Shoeburyness at 10:49. Buy Senior Rover ticket if you are aged over 60 (note T&Cs require proof of age e,g, driving licence). Senior Rover available from c2c ticket offices/ticket machines or buy online to collect from ticket machine. Note option to buy online is only for over 65.
