A brisk-paced circular walking tour under the light blue skies of Cambridge visiting numerous colleges, green spaces and places of interest, plus a walk along the Cam to Grantchester.
Rather than taking the demanding entrance exam, we get into Cambridge via the ever-busy railway station. We turn briefly into the city passing The Fitzwilliam Museum, before crossing Coe Fen and Lammas Land and heading out onto Grantchester Meadows and Grantchester village, where we will rest for a picnic lunch (optional pub drinks only - we won't stop long enough for all 9 seasons of the detective TV drama).
We retrace our steps downstream into town, and head along The Backs, taking in some grand views and Kettle's Yard. After enjoying Jesus Green and Midsummer Common, we head back into the hustle and bustle (ie tourists) in the city's narrow streets, and cross Christ's Pieces and Parkers Piece.
We finish on Hills Road, giving walkers the option of either heading straight back to the station or returning to take in more sights or take refreshment.
Expect flat easy walking and mostly on paved surfaces. Quite a lot of minor roads to cross. Watch out for cyclists!!
Please note access inside university colleges themselves is usually closed to visitors.
Travel:
Recommended fast train is the 10.12 from Kings Cross arriving 11.00 but there are cheaper and slower trains from Liverpool Street.
Use WCs on the train or at the station.
No booking required.
The finishing time is only a guide and will depend the speed of the group and how long we stop at the many places of interest on the way.
No dogs please.
