This is a moderate circular route of approximately 6 miles. It starts in Middle Chare carpark, close to the Parish Centre and St Mary and St Cuthbert's Church. We walk through the Riverside Park, cross the River Wear on the road bridge and then turn left, towards the Golf Club and Lumley Castle. We continue uphill, towards the castle grounds, behind the golf course and on towards Castle Dene. We then walk down to Brecon Hill, along the top path. We turn right, coming out onto Lumley New Road and crossing over, towards Lumley Thicks. From there, we go over fields and into the village of Great Lumley: when we reach the Vicarage, there will be a brief snack stop. After this break, we walk on the waggon ways until we reach the top of the village. There is then a steady downhill section, with lovely views, back to the Riverside Park and the carpark.
Option for shorter walk: If any walkers would like to shorten this walk, there is an option for them to park at the Riverside carpark and join/leave the walk at this point. Please note that you must let the walk leader know if you intend to do this, so that an agreed meeting location can be planned. If the walk leader is not aware of anyone doing the short walk, the group will not wait at this car park.
NB: The AGM starts at 2pm at the Lambton Arms, Front Street. The plan is to return to the start point carpark, with enough time for walkers to change footwear, before the meeting.
