Kingfisher Walk, West Rainton.
A moderate 5 mile walk commencing at Rainton Meadows Village. We leave the village heading south to Moore House, alongside the A690.Turning east we pass a local scout centre and then cross over the old Leamside Railway, and into Mallygill Wood. We twist and turn along good footpaths and meet our first set of footpath steps with wooden risers. We then crossover the A1 Motorway footbridge and into Rainton Park Wood. We eventually descend down to the river Wear by a quite steep footpath which is very narrow and with footpath risers of different heights. We shall take our time on this descent of about 150 meters. The path along the river is very flat and provides some excellent views. There is an abundance of bird wildlife and kingfishers have been seen previously in this area. We then have a steady but slow ascent back towards Leamside, passing through a field of cattle at Woodside Farm. Please be aware that the cattle have no interest in "Humans" at this time of the year.
Going through Leamside we take the PROW to Marks Lane and onto our finish point.
At the finish point, we are all invited to Kathleen Tweddle's house for a bowl of hot soup and bread roll. I know Kath is looking forward to meeting as many ramblers as possible - old and new.
