The Wandle Trail mostly follows the Wandle River, a tributary of the Thames in south London consisting of 15 miles of rich chalk stream habitat in good condition. In its industrial heyday, there were over 90 mills along its banks and this industrial heritage is a feature of the walk. The Trail runs from Croydon to the Thames Path in Wandsworth. We shall be starting our walk at Carshalton Ponds and finishing with a short stretch along the Thames to Putney Bridge.
We shall stop for about 45 minutes at Morden Hill Park (National Trust) for lunch (café or packed lunch/toilets).
The Trail is generally easy going but may be narrow and uneven in places.
Travel is entirely within TfL zones. From Victoria station, take the 10:11 train to Dorking, arriving Carshalton at 10:39. We plan to finish the walk at Putney Bridge station (District Line) as that is probably more convenient for those living in west London. As we reach the Thames, you may prefer to head instead for Wandsworth Town station (SWR). There are many other drop out points along the route.
