Overview

The walk begins at the Gaggle of Geese in Buckland Newton taking in landscapes described by Hardy in his novel 'The Woodlanders'.  After a short walk through the village, the track climbs up to Ridge Hill and then descends to Revel’s Farm, thought to represent 'The Revellers Inn' in the Woodlanders novel.  The path carries on passing through Lyon’s Head Farm onto Dogbury Plantation.  The junction at Dogbury Gate is reputedly used by Hardy in the opening scene of the Woodlanders where the key character enquires for directions to 'Little Hintock', now thought to be based on the village of  'Hermitage'.  The walk then goes along Little Minterne Hill, through the Giant’s Head Caravan Park where it joins the Wessex Ridgeway and then Hardy’s Way which leads back to Buckland Newton.

The terrain is undulating and comprises lanes, tracks, droves and field paths.  It will be muddy for short sections.
