The route covers half of the West Lothian Shale Trail, which explores the interesting history of the local shale industry that died out by the 1960s. Starting at West Calder station, we ascend Five Sisters bings, three of them steeply, for spectacular 360° views. The rest of the walk we follow paths through community woodland, above the River Almond but largely avoiding Livingston town centre. There is interesting wildlife throughout and we pass Mill Farm with rare breeds on view. The walk ends in Mid Calder where those who wish can have tea.
Frequent buses from there to Edinburgh, and also some back to West Calder and the 9.26am train from Edinburgh Waverley arrives in time for the walk.
Edinburgh Group grade: B
Booking essential.
Mainly on footpaths, though there are three stretches on pavements and beside a busy road (about 1.5km altogether). Near West Calder, we cut across boggy ground.
