The walk starts at Weymouth Railway Station and follows the South West Coast Path along the Georgian Esplanade to the harbour including a brief stop at St Mary's Church to see the altarpiece depicting 'The Last Supper'. This was donated to Weymouth by Sir James Thornhill who also painted the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the 'Painted Hall' at Greenwich. After crossing the harbour bridge we will see some of the oldest properties in Weymouth before reaching the Nothe Fort which was built by the Victorians to guard Portland and Weymouth Harbours.
We will continue along the SWCP until we reach Sandsfoot Castle (which was built by Henry VIII to provide protection against the French) before returning to Weymouth along the Rodwell Trail which runs along the disused railway linking Weymouth and Portland.
We will also walk through the RSPB Bird Reserve at Radipole before completing our walk. The paths through the reserve have recently been raised and improved with the help pf Ramblers to make them more accessible throughout the year.
This walk is joint with Wessex Wanderers Railway Walks.
The walk has been planned to provide an opportunity to learn about the history and heritage of Weymouth as well as providing excellent views of Weymouth, Portland Harbour and a Bird Reserve.
