Overview

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

This walk explores the expansive parkland and woods north of Wheathampstead village, as well as parts of the upper Lea valley nearby.

Setting off east through picturesque meadows alongside the River Lea, we'll then proceed north past two stately homes along part of the Hertfordshire Way regional trail.

We'll then discover one of South Hertfordshire's prettiest villages at our packed lunch stop in Ayot St Lawrence. The village boasts grand houses, cute cottages, a 16th century pub and two churches, one of which being an unusual neoclassical example, and the other a well preserved ruin that's open to the public.

After lunch we cross more parkland on our way to Gustardwood Common, returning to Wheathampstead via easy paths though woods and a golf course. There's an optional pub stop at the end of the walk at The Swan in Wheathampstead for those who fancy a post-walk drink.

Public toilets are available at the start/end point.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited. Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.

If you have any questions, or need to contact the walk leader urgently on the day of the walk, please post to the Meetup event chat.
