Overview

Chosen for firm ground on days of muddy walks in the countryside, this walk visits many interesting places in the city of Bristol.  Please read the starting instructions carefully as the walk is planned around taking public transport to the start for those living out of town. Our first stop will be Bristol Cathedral where we can stop for coffee before walking to Brandon Hill Park and the site of Cabot Tower. Keeping on high roads we walk through the fascinating Bird Cage Walk to reach Clifton village and on to The Observatory on Clifton Downs.  Downhill to Hotwells and a slight climb up to Clifton Woods for a glorious view of Bristol Harbour before we walk along the harbour side to Pero's bridge and enter the old city via Queen's Square.

Lots of interesting features along the way and several stops for coffee and investigating the historical sights.

Meet and start at the corner of Lower Maudlin Street where it joins The Haymarket. Walk designed to use buses from Radstock, Midsomer Norton, Paulton area. Best bus from Somer Valley is the 172 Bath to Bristol direction which passes Midsomer Norton Town Hall at 9:11a.m. and Paulton Church Lane at 9:25. This bus takes the A37 into Bristol and reaches the bus station at approximately 10:24. You may also find the Mendip Flyer 376 bus from Street Bristol Bus Station an option. (It does not divert into the Somer Valley area, but stays on the A39 and A37). Check the timetable for the bus which leaves Street at 8:45 and arrives at Bristol Bus Station at 10:39. For return buses there will be the option for those travelling on the 172 to take either the 172 or the 522 home. Those travelling on the 376 can take either the 376 (all the way) or the 172 if you alight at Temple Cloud or earlier. Please join us by your chosen transport if you live elsewhere.
