Waypoints

1

From the front of the station, turn L and L again to cross the railway line. Walk down Grovehill Road, continuing straight past a Sainsbury’s and going straight on at the roundabout.

2

Opposite a car wash, turn L onto the footpath, following Beverley and Barmston Drain. Go through the gate onto Swinemoor common, then turn R to cross over the footbridge. Follow the fence straight ahead then turn L at the River Hull and follow the embankment north along the river. Pass some ex-boats peeking out of the reeds and take a moment to watch the waterfowl. This is common pasture and depending on the season there may be horses or cattle grazing on the wetlands.

3

Go through a gate, passing a paddock and then another gate. At the bridge keeper’s house, turn L and follow Hull Bridge Road as it joins the busy A1035. Go straight on at the roundabout and follow the road back into central Beverley.

4

At the Cornerhouse pub, cross over and go straight on along Hengate to reach St Mary’s church – where you can spot stone carvings of characters from C S Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia placed high up on the walls. Turn L, then fork L again onto Saturday Market, passing the early 18th-century Market Cross. Each year, this area hosts the Beverley Festival of Christmas, with a parade and three Victorian Christmas markets. Catch it on Sunday 8 December in 2024.

5

At the far end of the marketplace, follow Toll Gavel through a bustling little shopping district that feels a bit like a mini-York.

6

Emerging onto Wednesday Market, cross over and head down Highgate to reach Beverley Minster. Turn R then L down St John’s Street, continuing L along Minster Yard South to walk around three sides of the Minster. Tradition (and some archaeological evidence) holds that Beverley Minster sits on the site of an 8th century monastery, and construction began on the current building in 1190 after the previous Norman church burned down. Visit from 4–8 December 2024 to catch the annual Christmas Tree Festival, with more than 150 decorated trees.

7

At Eastgate, turn L. Cross over Eastgate and turn R down Friar’s Lane, passing the old Friary (now a youth hostel). Take the footbridge over the railway line, then turn L to return to the train station.
