Walking the far reaches of Northumberland with theatre company, November Club

Appreciate the vastness of Northumberland as we head out West towards the border with Cumbria.  This 7-mile walk takes in the heights of Walltown Crags before following the combined long-distance walking routes of Hadrian’s Wall Path and the Pennine Way to Green Croft, returning via Greenhead.

Walking along the Wall and the Vallum, we are once again in the midst of amazing historical treasures.  Aside from ruins of the Wall itself, we will walk past Milecastle 45, Thirlwall Castle and across Magna Roman Fort, home to two of the most exotic Roman regiments to have served in Roman Britain, the Syrian archers and the Dalmatian mountain soldiers.  If we are lucky, we might eve see the archaeologists at work on the Fort.

We plan to lunch at Green Croft on the Wall, home to Green Croft Arts led by Amanda Drago & Kit Haigh.  During lockdown, Green Croft Arts commissioned a beautiful soundwalk, Collison and Conflict, which you can tap into on our walk. Details of how to do this are in the route information.

This really is a walk that combines some of Northumberland’s greatest treasures: its landscape, its history and, of course, its arts and culture.  You are very welcome!

Edenhall Ladies Walk

Get out and about with others in your community to enjoy a walk and a chat and enjoy the wonderful local surroundings. All walks last about an hour - shorter 30 minute walk options will also be available on most dates. After each walk there will be an opportunity to have a chat over a cup of tea and home-made cake in the VIC, Culgaith's community cafe, where you can find out more information about our walk programme and details of other community events. Leaving Edenhall we walk down to the River Eden keeping an eye out for heron, swans and ducks. Then we follow the riverside through the trees – tree roots provide some trip hazards! Then we wind our way up and back to the village. Wet weather makes the walk particularly tricky so we have an alternative route down to the riverside. We then detour to St Cuthbert’s Church where we study one of the many beautiful stained glass windows to try to find the exotic animal.

All walks last about an hour - shorter 30 minute walk options are available on most dates. From the lodge, this walk leads down the picturesque no through road towards the very small hamlet of Udford. There are stunning views of The Pennines and the ‘fluorescent’ radar dome on the summit of Great Dun Fell. Also Cross Fell at nearly 3,000 feet, the highest hill on The Pennine Chain, is also visible from the walk. Cross Fell is infamous for the only named wind in the UK called The Helm wind and on many days the very distinctive Helm Bar can be seen hanging over it. Wildlife may be seen, including Fallow Deer and the Common buzzard, plus the elusive Red Squirrel hopping along the roadside wall.
