Local elections 2025: How you can stand up for access

The May elections in England are a great opportunity to make the case for greater access to the outdoors

Our public rights of way network, and green routes in towns and cities, have a vital role to play in bringing the benefits of walking outdoors to people across England.

But all too often the importance of protecting and enhancing these fantastic assets is overlooked. The result? Persistent barriers that mean too many people are unable to access nature as part of their daily lives.

Here’s where local elections come in. While central government has responsibility for creating new nation-wide legislation and policy, it is the job of local councils and metro mayors to put this into practice and enforce existing laws. They are the ones who can tackle the most immediate issues, from blocked paths to impassable stiles and a lack of opportunity to get out on your doorstep.

That’s why, the May elections are a vital opportunity to stand up for access in your community.

How you can help make the case for walking

On 1 May, elections will be held for 23 councils and six mayors across England. So the first thing to do is to check whether there is an election being held in your area.

If there is, check whether this is for your local council, your local mayor or for both.

Then, to help you make the case for access to nature on the doorstep, we’ve put together an A5 factsheet for both council and mayoral elections, complete with our ambitions and how you can support them.

Highlighting the importance of walking to your local candidates is one of the most effective ways we can transform our access to nature and break down the barriers to the outdoors. The May elections provide a fantastic opportunity to do so.

Together, we can unlock the outdoors for all.

Outdoors Unlocked

We’re calling on the government to introduce a transformational new Access to Nature Bill. This bill will break down barriers to the outdoors so everyone in England can enjoy the benefits of walking in nature.

We think every town and city should have a network of green routes so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of walking in nature.
