A circular walk in the Pang Valley crossing over farmland, through the woods and out the other side. The route leaves the village of Frilsham, passes through Whittmoor and Blackwell copses before turning North East along Burntbush Lane prior to crossing the M4. We pause near Eling for morning refreshments before passing through Hampstead Norreys (whose WWII airfield hosted a small number of squadrons of Wellington bombers and was bombed on 16 September 1940 by the Luftwaffe) on our way to Ashampstead. The village was called Esshamstede in the 13th and 14th centuries, the parish church of Saint Clement dates from the 12th century. It has 13th century frescoes and a 15th-century wooden bell turret. It is believed the frescoes may have been painted by monks from the nearby Reading Abbey.
Following a break at Ashampstead for lunch we continue South via Yattendon before recrossing the motorway to return to Frilsham having passed 4 (four) coffee / tea rooms on the route.
Underfoot conditions are generally good but the increasing rainfall has created areas of shallow standing water and 'soft' sections which are likely to be muddy on the day. There are short sections of road walking.
There are 5 stiles, 2 sqeeze stiles and a homemade gate to negotiate.
The walk is limited to 16 participants, and booking online via the link is required.
Please bring food and drink for the day, there is no guarantee that refreshments can be acquired on the route.
Given the variable nature of the weather please ensure your clothing and footwear is adequate for the conditions
