We start at Cross Keys Inn on A683. ( note my OS map gives incorrect number of A638!!). The walk is up Cautley Home Beck ( fairly flat), with fine views of Cautley Spout. We then start a steep and rugged climb to Bowderdale Head (700 feet). Depending on the weather, we can take the direct route to Yarlside (600 feet climb), or go further up the valley to Hazel Gill and then onto Yarlside. There are fine views of north Howgills and Bowderdale valley from Yarlside. The direct descent from Yarlside is steep (1300 feet) and grassy, and maybe slippery in frost/wet. There is an alternative, more gradual route. A relatively short but rugged walk. Tea/coffee will be at Tebay Truck stop.
