The third of four days walking in and around the Porlock area of Somerset. Check out the Event pages for more information about the Porlock Walking Weekend.
This walk is a surprising gem that is quite demanding but really worth it. This is a circular walk from imposing Dunster Castle. From here we take the meadow path, with good views of the castle, out to ancient Gallox Bridge, sitting prettily astride the River Avill. From here we begin the first of our four serious climbs on the route, skirting Gallox Hill through beautiful woodland to the high heath of Bat's Castle, an old hill fort with stunning views to the Bristol Channel and coastline. From here we'll drop deeply into the valley before our next climb toward Black Hill and Monkham Hill, before a precipitous descent through Slowley Wood to Kingsbridge. We then cross broad sloping pastures to take on our next hill, taking lunch near the top of the climb at the edge of Croydon Hill. Once again we drop down off the moor, through Timberscombe, on our way to a final climb at Knowle Hill. We track the ridge, again taking in northerly views, before making our final descent down Grabbist Hill, offering breathtaking sights high above the steep-sided valley on our way back to charming Dunster village, and on to our start point.
