Overview

A circular walk that begins on Exmoor which, although remote, should be quicker to reach for those arriving from the Dorset area.

From the moor, we drop down to river level, joining the lovely wooded East Lyn river at Rockford, then following its path along the well-defined Coleridge Way down into the seaside town of Lynmouth for lunch and a brief stop. You should also note that the second half of the walk demands a steep (quite strenuous) climb out of Lynmouth on a zigzag path back up to moor level. This is followed by a variety of drops and rises (albeit gentler) thereafter on the way back to the start point, accompanied by continuing beautiful river and woodland views as we go.

Booking essential, priority will be given to Dorset 4050 members.  Please use the link below to book your provisional place. You’ll receive confirmation of your place from Andy within ten days if not before.

Fitness

All participants are responsible for their own health and fitness to undertake this walk / programme. We’re known for being one of the quicker-walking Dorset groups, our pace is reasonably brisk, with periodic drink stops. In addition, the Exmoor terrain is hilly and moderately challenging – please contact walk leaders if you have any doubts, as on rare occasions it’s been necessary to inform people they should not take part.

Food & Drink

Make sure you bring enough snacks and drink to keep you going for the duration of the walk. We will stop en route to eat a packed lunch.

Pace

Circa 2.8 miles per hour.

Attire

Check the weather forecast beforehand and dress appropriately.

Weather

This area is renowned for rapid and unexpected changes in visibility / weather (even at this time of the year), so come prepared.

Post walk refreshments

We will head directly to Porlock – those who wish to can meet in one of the three pubs in the village.

Start time:
11:00 am

Near Shilstone Hill/Dry Bridge.  There is some free parking at the start point but only space for approx 10 vehicles. There is another nearby parking area. Directions: Note: it's a good 2 3/4 hours drive to the start point (based on a central Bournemouth location) so please allow extra time. Mobile signal is still very patchy. The best method by far is to use whatthreewords. If not, use your normal travel planning to reach Simonsbath then take the B3223 (signposting for Cheriton and Bridge Ball) a further 4.6 miles (8 minutes) until you reach a sharp left bend, where you will find the car park on the right bend that follows it. This will be marked with a prominent sign (the flag of Chile in fact!) to highlight the start point.
