Derwenthaugh Country Park
This is a moderate circular walk of just under 5 miles, starting from the Dam Head car park and taking in a large section of Derwenthaugh Park, a short stretch of the Derwent Walk and extending out to the edge of the Fellside Road estate in Whickham to get great views across to Newcastle. Most of the walk is on established tracks and shade is provided for at least 50% of the walk.
There are a couple of moderate climbs during the walk. One of these is an optional climb up some steep steps to see the ruins of the 13th Century Hollinside Manor. If any walkers wish to avoid this steep section, they can simply continue on the level path of the Derwent Walk and rejoin the main group after about half a mile. Checks will be made on preferences at the appropriate point.
Please note also that the cafe we will be visiting is situated approximately half a mile before the end of the walk. It is designed as a cafe for cyclists and has outdoor space as well as inside seating. There is not a lot of parking there so it seems most practical to visit the cafe en route. If any walkers do not wish to go to the cafe, directions will be provided for the final half mile back to the car park. It is a simple and straightforward route.
Cafe plan
As per instructions above, the plan is to call into the Pedalling Squares Cafe, Quality Row Road, NE16 3AQ, towards the very end of the walk. I will confirm numbers at the beginning of the walk and for anyone not coming to the cafe, will provide directions for the last half mile back to the car park.
