The normal walk would start from Ae village, but parking considerations will see us start from the Forestry Scotland car park, opposite the toilets and the Ae cafe (which does excellent tray bakes!).
The route starts beside the river Ae and walks northwards following the river until we pass through a second car park. From here it is woodland walks, arriving at Ae forest bridge and stopping for some photos of the carvings.
Crossing the bridge we begin a long, but not too steep climb. We then perform a dog-leg that leads us gently southwards before we perform another dog-leg and begin a gentle upwards climb that follows the contours around the hill before we turn and drop down quite sharply to turn left and cross the river at a scenic point. Following the river we cross it again and then follow it back to the second car park where we will follow our original route back to the cars and the long-awaited coffee and tray-bake!
