After a short section along the main road we take the east bank of the River Arun then pick up the South Downs Way for a long climb up Bury and Westburton Hills. After a mile along a track through forest there is a short steep descent on track and a minor road into the village of Bignor and the remains of the Roman villa (5 miles).
The villa houses impressive mosaics. Admission is £11 and £9.50 for senior citizens excluding voluntary donations. Please bring a picnic lunch: the tearoom sells hot and cold drinks, cakes, scones and ice creams but does not stock large quantities. We can use the picnic tables by the villa. The tearoom and lavatories are free to the public so anyone not wishing to enter the villa can still use the facilities. After lunch we walk along a mix of minor roads and footpaths, sometimes overgrown, to reclaim the River Arun via the village of Bury. Once over the bridge on the Amberley road there is the option of a snifter at The Bridge Inn close to the station.
I have marked the walk as moderate, despite it being 8 miles, as there is one long climb and a short but steep descent in the morning. There is a small ascent in the afternoon.
