Croft Castle was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1957 and offers some excellent and varied walks. Of particular interest are the ancient trees in its parkland - oak, chestnut and hawthorn - which form a major feature of this walk. The hill fort at Croft Ambrey offers far-reaching views, as does Bircher Common, interspersed with some interesting trails through the adjoining woodland. All in all a varied walk on mainly good paths, though a little mud cannot be ruled out. Yarpole itself is not without interest and a visit to the famous 12th century bell tower will precede the walk itself.
The walk starts from the village of Yarpole. The easiest way to get there is to turn off the B4362 at Cock Gate. Follow this road down through the village and just before you reach the church (on your left) look out for a small road on your right - there is a wooden seat and covered information board on the corner. Go down this road for a short distance and then turn left up a short stony track onto the Community Meadow where a sign points to car parking.
