This is a grade A, strenuous walk. Ben Vane at 915m (3,002 ft) only just makes Munro status, but it is a steep, rocky little mountain with real character. We start the walk from Inveruglas visitor centre, by crossing the busy A82 then turning left. We walk alongside the road for about 1km before turning right and heading up towards Loch Sloy on a tarmac road. We then turn left to cross a bridge, then up to the start of the hill walk. The path to the summit is very rocky with boggy areas at lower levels. There are a number of false summits before we reach the actual summit, which is surprising flat. Superb views here (hopefully). There is quite a lot of scrambling to do on this mountain, which adds to the fun. Good boot, gaiters and walking poles are essential.
We will meet in Kilmarnock at 06.50 for a prompt 7am start. My aim is to start walking at 08.45. To get to Inveruglas visitor centre, take the M74 north then M8 west to the Erskine bridge. From the bridge turn left ( A82 Crianlarich) Follow the A82 to Tarbet. Stay on the A82. After 4 miles you will reach our start point on the right side of the road. There is a brown tourist sign for Inveruglas 450m before the turning. Total mileage 124. There is a £4 all day parking charge. Please let me know if you intend to join me for this walk whether from the meeting point, or from the start point. Ken Stow 07543698477
