An scenic walk through undulating old mining country along little-used footpaths, we start at the New Lount Nature Reserve, a working colliery from 1924 to 1968 and now a pretty wooded landscape with ponds and wildlife. We walk up some steps before continuing uphill and then along good paths through woods and fields towards the new windmill - an electricity-generating wind turbine. From here we head east towards the old windmill, Hough Tower Mill, built in the 1820's but replacing an earlier mill from 1790. We will stop here for lunch (the mill itself will be closed to visitors at the time of this walk). Then we head north picking up part of the Ivanhoe Way towards our start point. Some of the paths in the second half of the walk are a little overgrown, and there are 25 stiles to negotiate.
Booking is essential - if you would like to join this walk please contact the leader using the email link. Numbers limited to 20 walkers.
Total ascent is 700 feet with some quite steep, albeit short, climbs in places. This coupled with the number of stiles means that walkers will need to be reasonably agiIe, so I have limited walker numbers to 20 in order to keep us moving.
Please bring a packed lunch.
