Overview

A varied walk on good tracks, fields, woodland and along a river’s edge, with one long steep climb thrown in. An area we don’t explore often, beyond North Dorset and fully into Wiltshire, with lovely views across the wide sweeping valleys found in this area.

We begin in pretty Broadchalke, heading out with good views of high hills to the south, before turning north on steadily rising solid paths and then drop in to Barford St Martin, nestling in the Nadder valley. We cross the Nadder for the first time, continuing north before turning to Baverstock and then across broad pastures, where we expect to take lunch, then on to the historic village of Dinton.

From here we make our southbound turn across fields, re-crossing the river in a dramatic fast-flowing stretch at Mill Farm, before ultimately reaching the unique stretch of hillside that carries the renowned Fovant Badges, etched into the chalk. We make the steep climb up between the Badges, before tracing firm pathways back to Broadchalke. Here we have the opportunity for rewarding refreshment at the acclaimed Queen’s Head. Although the route was pretty good at the time, always be prepared for a muddy stretch somewhere!

Note: our group walks quite briskly; this route is fairly demanding of terrain and distance so if you have any concerns about fitness/capability please contact the walk leader in advance.
