Hello Everyone
A varied local walk for us all this Sunday starting from The Glacial Boulder above Brocton village at the northern end of Cannock Chase before dropping down to Bednall and Walton-on-the Hill. Indeed, there are some hills hence the Moderate tag. No doubt a few muddy stretches along the way too. Forestry tracks, field footpaths, and a little road walking complete the circuit. There's a few stiles in the field sections.
As ever, you're welcome to join in of course. If this is your first time with us it'd be great if you could drop us a line to advise so that we can keep our 👀's open for you given that the start isn't that easy to find without any precise postcode, and that other nearby car parks might confuse matters.
Registration: 09.15. Walk start: 09.30. Walk leader: John S (07575 266680)
No facilities at the start or during the walk.
Post walk refreshments will be taken somewhere or other. We'll sort that out on the day!
Our own members should note there will be no rendezvous at Hednesford this week. Please drive direct to the start. See you there.
Directions: The start is located at The Glacial Boulder car park situated on Chase Road, above Brocton, Staffordshire. Unless you know Brocton village very well this is best accessed from Camp Road which connects Pye Green tower and Broadhurst Green across the Chase to the A34 near Brocton. This car park will be familiar to the majority of our members but certainly not everyone so directions below, with a couple of important riders first:
⚠️There is no precise postcode for the start. Springslade Lodge cafe (WS12 4PT) on Camp Road is the nearest but still one mile away. Please use What3Words, or even the grid reference, both provided in the location details. Worth also referring to the OS 1:25k map in the photos above to give yourself a better idea.
⚠️Take care not to miss the unmarked turn off Camp Road into Chase Road identified by a small triangular road layout at it's junction. Camp Road screenshots showing this junction from both directions also in the photos above.
If approaching from the A34 northbound via Cannock proceed on the A34, direction Stafford, for 2.8 miles from the town centre following the signs for the Military Cemetery. After Huntingdon turn right at Pottal Pool Island, direction Rugeley and the military cemetery. Continue uphill for 1 mile to Broadhurst Green Crossroads where turn left into Camp Road and continue past the cemetery on your right and then Springslade Lodge cafe on the left 0.7 mile later.
After passing the cafe continue for a further 0.6 mile, ignoring the first right turn you come to after 0.4 mile, to then turn right into Chase Road (identified solely by the small triangular road layout at the junction here) and follow the course of the road for another 0.6 mile until the layby car park on your left where you pull in and park at ninety degrees. Photo above. Ignore Chase Road Corner car park set back on a spur to your right beforehand and follow the road around to the left at this point.
If approaching from Lichfield take the A51 then head for Rugeley town centre via Brereton on the A460 until the miners statues island near the town centre. Straight over this, still A460, then 400 yards later turn left at the lights into Hagley Road and follow the course of the road without deviation for exactly 3.9 miles to Broadhurst Green Crossroads where turn right, signed for the cemetery. Pass the cemetery on your right and Springslade Lodge cafe on your left 0.7 mile later, then as above.
From Stafford pick up the A34 southbound, direction Cannock, and proceed for 2 miles to Brocton crossroads where carry on for a further 500 yards to pass The Chetwynd Arms then turn left into Camp Road signed for Pye Green & Hednesford. Climb upwards for 1.8 miles to approach the junction with Chase Road towards the end of a long straight. Turn left into Chase Road, then as above.
