Ashford Ramblers South Downs weekend, finishes with an 8.5 mile walk from Burwash, which is well situated on our short drive back home to Kent.
This is Wealden country at its best and many of the paths used offer excellent views across it. We start by walking almost the entire length of the village, before heading in a southerly direction towards Socknersh Manor. Soon follows Socknersh Reservoir, which we skirt the edge of, before reaching Oxley's Green, where the redundant pub The Fullers Arms stands.
On reaching Brightling, we will have our lunch stop at the church, where situated is a pyramid in the churchyard, which is the burial place of John Fuller. A wealthy eccentric, known to all as "Mad Jack", as well as his burial pyramid, he built a number of follies in the area, one of which we will visit on a short detour.
We pass under a bridge that has figure of 8 vulcanised beltway above, this carries gypsum from Brightling Mine to Mountfield Mine, it apparently never stops moving. Heading through scrubland, which can sometimes be a bit overgrown, we eventually reach a road, to pass Bateman's, the home of Rudyard Kipling.
On our return to Burwash, the Rose & Crown is the preferred choice of pub for the walk leader, as we finish the weekend off nicely with refreshments.
Walk leader is Kevin Hall
