Overview

From Butlers Cross we head to the impressive Ellesborough Church and then skirt around Beacon Hill and Cymbellines castle, with distant views. We climb some steps and join the Cradle footpath and eventually the Ridgeway path before turning off along the edge of Pulpit wood, and the Grangelands and Pulpit hill Nature reserve. We will find a spot for lunch on some fallen logs along here . We then head through Pond wood and get a good glimpse of Chequers. We cross the road and then pass through Buckmoorend before a short climb to a path along the woodland edge of Goodmerhill wood and emerge across from the side entrance to Chequers with a quirky gate. We then walk along the edge of Lodge Hill and the golf course and looking up see the monument on Coombe Hill. At the end of the path we cross over to the golf course and continue on a footpath which leads us back to Butlers Cross, where we may partake of refreshments in the Russell Arms PH. There are several ups and downs on the walk with some very muddy patches which may be slippy, so poles may be useful. Bring a snack and a packed lunch.
