The ascent of Cadair Idris via the Pony Path is becoming something of an annual event for the Meirionnydd Ramblers. The path starts near Dolgellau and is probably the most popular route to the summit, heading up the mountainside to the curve of the cliff edge above Llyn y Gadair. Climbing quite gently from the Tŷ Nant car park, the well-made path soon steepens, with steps to help in several places. On the way up there are spectacular views over the Mawddach estuary towards Barmouth. Once on the ridge the views open up inland across to Bala and the mountains of Snowdonia while looking down, the little lake of Llyn y Gadair lies far below. Finally there’s a short, easy clamber up to the trig point on the summit of Penygadair. After resting and having a picnic lunch near the top, we return via the same path.
