A memorable ramble through some of the less well known but beautiful countryside in Staffordshire Moorlands, all linked together by the Manifold Trail. There are some great views across the Manifold Valley and beyond.
We start from outside the church in the little known but charming village of Calton, descending steeply and crossing the Manifold Trail. We climb sharply through fields and country lanes to the village of Waterfall, then following Slade Lane up to Grindon, another little known but memorable Moorlands village, from which we descend steeply once again into the Manifold Valley, with great views of the hills and mountains which surround Thors Cave as we go. We then walk along the Manifold Trail, passing Beeston Tor before turning left into Soles Hollow for the long ascent to higher ground with yet more wonderful views across the valley. There follows a pleasant walk along a country lane back to our starting point.
This is an excellent walk but conditions are likely to be boggy and may be slippery in places, so please come prepared.
