Climbing up from Rothbury we pass the picturesque Addycombe Cottages, built in 1873 as cottages for retiring staff of Lord Armstrong’s household. Contouring along the Rothbury terraces, with splendid views of the Coquet valley and Simonside, we pass a series of World War One training trenches before entering a mixed woodland of birch, beech and larch.
We then climb Cartington Hill for a lunch stop at the top and, if the weather is good, walk along the ridge to admire the all-round views of the Cheviot, Hedgehope, Thrunton Woods and Simonside. We then descend through the woods and moors to return to Rothbury.
The terrain is mostly tracks and moorland paths.
