Join us for a full day's strenuous walking in the Chiltern Hills. Our route starts by heading across the Wormsley Countryside Estate, through woods, farmland and on tracks towards Northend and Turville Heath, then heading through Fire Wood towards Christmas Common. From here, we'll drop downhill, skirting along the bottom of Shurburn Wood, before taking our time over our final climb of the day, up Shirburn Hill.
There is a possible café stop after lunch at The Barn café at Turville Heath. (Please text the leader before Thursday 3rd April if you plan to join the walk, as the café need to know numbers in advance.)
Meet for a 10:30 start at the Cowleaze (Forestry England) car park in Cowleaze Wood, north-west of Watlington (on the road between Christmas Common and Stokenchurch).
Please note that the walk has 1500 ft of ascent, which is rather more than we're used to in Berkshire. You'll need to be comfortable with several fairly steep, and possibly muddy climbs during the day. There is a particularly steep uphill section in Blackmoor Woods, which is narrow and can be quite muddy and slippery after rain. Walking poles will be handy here if you normally use them. The plan is to walk at a 'steady and moderate' pace - going uphill more slowly if it's a warmer day.
Please bring a picnic lunch, snacks and plenty to drink - we'd suggest at least a litre if it's a warmer day. No dogs on this walk please.
