Starting at the entrance to the Cwmcarn Forest Drive Visitor Centre, we climb steadily along the side of the valley for approx 3 miles. This climb is relieved by short stretches of level walking before reaching the top and following the Cambrian Way to the Iron Age hillfort of Twmbarlwm. Along this ridge there are spectacular views in all directions across the Severn Estuary and towards Abergavenny and the Welsh Hills. The descent from Twmbarlwm to the Visitor Centre is long and steep and poles will be useful. This is a challenging walk, but the rewards lie in the variety of terrain and the 360° views from the ridge. There is a welcome cafe at the end in the Visitor Centre. As an extra bonus there are no stiles!
