Overview

This walk takes us into the wilds of Dartmoor, off the comfort of well maintained footpaths.

We'll be walking along old 'beaten ways', so please wear walking BOOTS for ankle support. This is no place to get an ouchy ankle!

We'll leave Combestone Tor car park and head south, up the gentle hill passing our first Dartmoor cross, and Ringleshutes mine. Staying on this track, we'll descend to Hapstead Ford, then onwards to Pupers Hill. We'll leave the track and make our way down to Huntingdon cross, on the banks of the Avon, passing more tin workings and Keeble Martin's Chapel.

We'll cross the river by the old Clapper bridge, climb up out of the valley, join the Redlake Tramway and follow it to the Rredlake China Clay works. This will make a good place for lunch.

We'll retrace our steps back to the Clapper bridge and climb up the other side of the valley to the 'Heap of Sinners'. From there, we'll follow the ridge to Ryders Hill, then pick up the old Sandy Way miner's track, which will take us back to Ringleshutes Mine. Then its downhill back to our cars at Combestone Tor.
There is the Church House Inn in the nearby village of Holne where we could get refreshments after the walk.
