Overview

This walk offers an interesting variety of landscape and terrains. It leaves Dent station by the Coal Road descending into Dentdale, to the banks of the river Dee. The ascent out of Dentdale is on an old drovers way and over the moorland separating it from Garsdale. On a clear day, there are good views over both dales as well as the Howgills beyond.

The route then drops down to the Clough river, before going up Garsdale, mainly through sheep pastures, to arrive at Garsdale Head.

Craven Ramblers’ rail ramble includes an 8 mile moderate walk that is planned to be followed by a special course 2 course meal at the Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head. Pre-booking is required via Andrew Gold on 07730 718205 or andrewgold@live.co.uk

Train times are provisional based on 2023 and will be updated for 2024 summer timetable when confirmed.

Book your return ticket for the furthest away station, ie if travelling North up the line book Garsdale return, alighting at Dent Station for the start of the walk and boarding at Garsdale Station for the journey home.

The walk aims to arrive at the Moorcock Inn approximately 14.45 for a special two-course lunch served around 15.00. Please confirm your meal choices when booking your place with Andrew Gold for him in turn to notify the Moorcock Inn as part of the overall Craven Ramblers’ order.

A number of places will be booked at the Moorcock Inn for the post-walk meal. The Moorcock Inn are willing to offer Craven Ramblers more places for the special post walk meal if they have capacity remaining after taking into account separate bookings made directly by the general public. Hence places on this Rail Ramble are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. It is advisable to book early if you want to partake.

When booking for the rail ramble, your provisional booking will only be confirmed on receipt of full payment for the meal (all meals not cancelled before 20 September still have to be paid in full to the Moorcock Inn if your place on the walk and meal is not able to be re-sold).

We will leave the Moorcock Inn around 16.00 to go to Garsdale Station to catch the 16.28 train south all stations to Leeds, arriving Skipton at 17.20 and Leeds at 18.05.
