We meet near the 18th-century Derwentcote steel furnace, from where the Derwent Walk takes us to Vindomora - a Roman fort now under the village of Ebchester, although some remains are still visible. Derwentcote produced high-grade steel in the 1700s and 1800s, and it is the most complete early steel-making furnace in Britain. It is now managed by English Heritage. You can find out more about its fascinating history by visiting the English Heritage website - see the link below.
During the walk, there is an opportunity to break for tea at Blackhall Mill when we cross the river Derwent on our way back to the steel furnace.
Advance booking is required for this walk. To reserve your place, please e-mail the walk leader, Julia, through the contact box above - and remember to include your mobile number in the mail.
