A circular 9.5 mile walk through the Finchampstead Ridges and Moor Green Lakes nature reserve.
Advance booking is not required, but if you plan on attending this walk, please indicate this on Meetup if you can (see Website link), so others can see that there will be plenty of people going.
Pace: medium.
Walk details
Starting from Crowthorne station this walk will initially take us alongside the railway line, through Ambarrow Hill woodland and Moor Green lake nature reserve where there is the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife.
After crossing farmland and passing through several wooded areas we will arrive in Finchampstead where we will eat our lunch on the grass opposite St James Church (sheltering underneath a tree if it is raining). There “may” be the opportunity for a quick stop at the Queens Oak after lunch however this will heavily depend upon weather conditions (and temperature) as there will likely only be space in the garden.
After lunch, we will continue across further fields before eventually arriving at Finchampstead Ridges. Finchampstead Ridges are home to a significant area of heathland, which is a greatly declining habitat in Europe, but vital for many specialist species. The ridges were originally owned by the Walter family, then owners of The Times newspaper. In 1913, following financial difficulties, the estate was broken up and they were gifted to the National Trust.
We will pass Heath Pond and continue along Heath Ride past the Heritage Family Naturist Club before eventually returning back to Crowthorne Station.
Although relatively flat there are a few undulations and the path in areas is uneven. There may be some muddy areas depending on the recent weather.
