Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us for the second of two walks from Biggleswade today, for a figure of eight walk in the quiet countryside of central Bedfordshire. You're welcome to join either of the walks or both if you want to get some extra miles in. This walk has been organised for National #GetOutside Day, founded by Ordnance Survey, which encourages people to get outside and appreciate nature, discover new places and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

If you’re new to countryside walking, or haven’t been to many group walks, this one is for you - the walk will take just 2 or 3 hours and will will give newcomers the chance to find out more about Stag Walkers and the Ramblers. Regular walkers are also invited to attend who'd like to welcome others to enjoy the outdoors with us.

In the afternoon we will be visiting the Broom Lakes. These former gravel pits have become an ecosystem with pools and wet meadows attracting many species of water birds and waders.

Departing from Biggleswade train station, we will head west, soon leaving the town headed to the Big Lake - with a surface area of 45 acres it is used as a prime spot for fishing. For this reason, it is fenced off, but you will still able to see it from many points.

We will walk past three other significant lakes, being able to admire the surrounding landscape - quite varied for such a short walk, with a mix of woodland, farmland and meadows - before meeting the River Ivel at Jordans Mill. From here we will walk along the river back to Biggleswade where you're welcome to join the walk leader for a refreshment in the local craft beer shop.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
