A combined 9 mile moderate, and 12 mile challenging walk
Those doing the 12 mile walk start at Goring and head up to Streatley Hill via Lardon Chase. Those doing the 9 mile walk start at Streatley Hill once the 12 mile walkers get there.
Both groups now cross Streatley Hill road and following the footpath south easterly before turning south towards Stichens Green and heading to Ashampstead on a combination of quiet roads and footpaths. Here we can get a cuppa at the farm shop. We then head towards Aldworth where we will stop for a well earned drink and a bite to eat.
From Aldworth we head in an Easterly direction and join The Ridgeway before finishing the 9 mile walk with a steady climb to the Streatley Hill car park via the golf course. Those undertaking the 12 mile walk will continue onwards towards Streatley/Goring and finish the walk at the car park in Goring. The Catherine Wheel pub beckons those with time to spare before the next train back to Reading.
If you are doing the 12 mile (challenging) walk, please meet in the Wheel Orchard car park, behind the Catherine Wheel pub, (RG8 9HB or SU599806) for a 9:50 start.
From Reading by train, take the 09:30, which stops at Goring & Streatley station at 09:42. It is a five-minute walk from the station to the car park. If driving, you can park at the Wheel Orchard car park (which costs £4 for 5 hours or £5 for 10 hours) or at the station car park (which costs £4.20 for the day). There are public toilets at the Wheel Orchard car park.
If you are doing the 9 mile (moderate) walk, please meet in the (free) car park on Streatley Hill, RG8 9RB or SU582806 (Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uLcuhe3M7dBpvAgJ8) for a 10:30 (approx) start once the leader and those doing the 12 mile walk have arrived from Goring via Lardon Chase.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: There are roadworks on Streatley Hill this weekend. The road will be closed to traffic between The Bull pub and the entrance to The Coombe. If driving from Reading, go to Pangbourne and take Pangbourne Hill (opposite The Cross Keys pub and by the church) then turn right into Pangbourne Road and follow it to Aldworth. At Aldworth, turn right onto the B4009 and follow this to Streatley Hill. The car park will be on the left, just after reaching the top of the hill. (This diversion only affects those doing the 9 mile version of the walk.)
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink. The direction of the walk(s) may change subject to weather conditions.
