This walk starts from the Wealden village of Groombridge on the Kent/Sussex border. We’ll pass Groombridge Place and then climb up through the Burrswood estate enjoying open farmland and valley views. The Wealdway and the Sussex Border Path will guide us to Ashurst from where we’ll follow the River Medway and Forest Way/Sussex Border Path back to Groombridge.
The first third of the walk includes a steep climb and other short uphill sections. Most of the second half of the walk is flat and includes some road walking on the return to Groombridge. There are approximately 5 stiles.
Refreshments after the walk at The Junction Inn (01892 864 275) or The Crown Inn (01892 864 742). Both have gardens and serve food until 16.30 on Sundays (best to book in advance).
Update 04.06.23: If you had planned to visit Groombridge Place and Gardens after the walk, the estate is currently closed.
On Sunday 18th we'll be able to see and hear steam trains passing Groombridge Station on the Spa Valley Railway 'Southern Steam Up!' event. Refreshments available at the station (TN3 9RD).
After the walk, why not visit some of the South East Open Studios at Groombridge (TN3 9PH) and Langton Green (TN3 0BL) which will be open until 17.00 on 18 June. See www.seos-art.org.
