Westwell is one of the many vineyards emerging on the south-west facing slopes of the North Downs. It lies just below the ancient Pilgrims Way route to Canterbury, close to the medieval village of Charing, near Ashford.
Leaving the vineyard, we start our walk with a short climb to the North Downs Way and then climb further on woodland-edge tracks. Passing the perimeter of the Kent Gliding Club, we hope to enjoy some quiet flight activity as we walk. Heading downhill, we join the Pilgrims Way near Dunn Street. Walking above the vineyards we head into Charing via Pett Place, the former home of comedian Bob Mortimer. Leaving the historic Charing village centre we re-trace our steps alongside the Alderbed Meadow, a special landscape of wet grassland and alder woodland, and return to Westwell Winery.
The walk is mainly on good tracks and some minor roads, with the possibility of a few waterlogged fields in the latter part of the walk.
Non-members are welcome for one of their three free 'taster' Ramblers walks.
With thanks to Ade from Medway Ramblers who inspired this route.
Dogs are welcome on short leads.
Nibble break part way through the walk - bring own refreshments.
After the walk: Wines, soft drinks, beers and a tutored tasting are available at Westwell Winery. Walkers can order toasted sandwiches and platters (cheese, charcuterie, vegetarian). There is no need to book food in advance; we will collect orders before the start of the walk.
