From Coulsdon South station the walk takes you on a scenic route, starting with a moderate climb up Farthing Down, offering panoramic views. The path then descends towards Netherne and Chaldon, where you can visit the historic Chaldon Church with the earliest known English wall painting. After a pub lunch at Coulsdon Common, the walk continues through the picturesque Happy Valley, with its tranquil atmosphere. Expect some short but steep inclines and descents throughout the journey. Finish about 4pm.
Travel: Train leaving Victoria 10.08, calling at Clapham Junction 10.15, arriving Coulsdon South 10.36.
This is a joint walk with Richmond Ramblers
Notes from my recce: We will meet on the ticket office side of the station as the toilets are on this side. The men’s are inside the ticket barrier and women’s are outside the barrier in the ticket office. Coulsdon South is in Oyster zone 6.
The weather forecast is dry, but cold. The muddy paths were quite slippery, so good shoes and walking poles are recommended.
The service at the Fox pub is quite fast so a pub lunch will be possible. I need to let them know how many will be having lunch. I was given permission for people to eat sandwiches in the pub gardens, but not inside.
