Overview

You are in for a real visual treat on this walk along the River Tees.  From the Bowlees car park, we cross the river on the grade-1-listed Wynch suspension bridge (built in 1820) and take the Pennine Way past both Low and High Force waterfalls.  High Force is England's highest waterfall and one of its most spectacular too.  Continuing along the Pennine Way, we take the short climb up to Bracken Rigg before turning and starting our return journey across open moorland and past the spectacular Holwick Scar.

The whole of this area is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The walk consists mostly of well-defined paths with boggy moorland sections and crosses two streams using stepping stones.

Park in the car park behind the Bowlees Visitor Centre on the B6277 road through Teesdale. Parking there is free, but voluntary donations of between £2 - £4 are requested. The simplest route from Hexham is probably to head for St. John's Chapel in Weardale, turning there on to a minor road over Langdon Fell to join the B6277 at Langdon Beck. Turn left here towards Forest-in-Teesdale. The visitor centre and car park are signposted on the left after about 6 miles.
