This is a circular walk in the hilly countryside north east of Kimpton. We set off across agricultural land before descending into the valley of the River Mimram and the village of Whitwell, once renowned for its watercress. After ascending to St Paul's Walden Bury, the presumed birthplace of the Queen Mother, we drop down again before encountering a particularly steep grassy avenue.
Later in the walk we travel through Hoo Park, once the home of a large mansion and grounds landscaped by Lancelot "Capability" Brown. The house was demolished in 1958 and much of the area returned to farming. This takes us back to our starting point. The walk will be followed by refreshments a short distance away at The Boot public house.
Meet in the Parkfield Recreation Ground (cricket and tennis club) car park, off the B651 Hitchin Road, Kimpton, SG4 8EF. The entrance is on the left just beyond the parish church.
There is no need to pre-book or contact the leader in advance. If you are already a Ramblers member, please bring your Ramblers card (or membership details on the Ramblers app) to help speed up the register before we start the walk.
