Lighter days and clocks have gone forward, so now is the time to dust off those walking boots and return to an old favourite route for 2025.
Starting at the carpark of the Offa's Dyke Visitor Centre in Knighton we cross the river and ascend the steep climb to the Offa's Dyke footpath to skirt the top of Panpunton Hill. Following the ridge north along the footpath with stunning views across the Welsh countryside we descend to the town of Knucklas.
Visiting the innovative and wonderful community orchard (https://knucklascastle.org.uk/kcclp/orchard/).
You will have to return in October to sample the Knucklas Apple Day.
We ascend a small defensive hill to the remains of Knucklas Castle, constructed by Ralph Mortimer in the 13th Century. This is 21 acres of community space for the village of Knucklas and fulfils the function of a village green. Originally an Iron Age fort which retained it's defensive fortifications over many centuries, until Owain Glyndwr demolished the fortification in the Welsh rebellion of 1402.
We then join the Heart of Wales Line Trail and walk our way back to Knighton.
A favourite walk for many members of the South Shropshire Ramblers it provides an opportunity to get back into the Welsh Marches and walk the ridges in the Spring sunshine.
Remember Wales does not always guarantee sunshine on every day, so bring a raincoat, just in case.
Free parking is available at the Offa's Dyke Centre.
Toilet facilities are available, centre re-opens Easter 2025 for new season.
post walk refreshments are available from Knighton tearooms
