10 am. Lapwing Lane SK11 9AD Easy 5.5 m
From Chelford roundabout, take the Holmes Chapel road (A535) past St John the Evangelist church, then Lapwing Lane is the second turning on the left. Drive down towards the end of the Lane and there are two good lay-bys for parking and some grassy areas if these get full.
A very pleasant Cheshire countryside walk, mainly on good tracks but with short distances on quiet lanes. I call this the dragonfly walk as we look down on reclaimed sand quarries and our paths are crossed by brilliant blue dragonflies and butterflies, with the sound of canada geese and (?) the pee-wit of lapwings from the water below. At different points, there are views of local landmarks, Jodrell Bank, Croker Hill and Shutlingsloe. And on this, the hottest day of the year so far, there were some very welcome shady stretches.
We walk through The Mosses to Congleton Lane. along a footpath beside the road then cross to fields, skirting the lakes from above, to come out at Wisterfield; lanes and tracks to Smiths Green, Dairyhouse Farm and Dingle Bank and return to Lapwing Lane.
I recommend walking poles and avoidance of shorts - some feisty nettles and brambles, growing well after our rather wet season!
