A long linear walk of 17.3kms (10.75 miles) along a mixture of quiet rural roads and tracks, gently climbing to a maximum of 127m before dropping down quite steeply for an entry into Johnstonebridge. This is a quiet, countryside walk through farming country with a few wooded areas thrown in for variety. Although an integral part of the Annandale Way, we only see the river for a short time in the middle and at the very end. There are a few short sections that are along busier roads.
After leaving Lochmaben, we meet and follow Kinnel Water before finally crossing it on a road bridge. Tracks lead us into Corncockle Plantation before re-joining quiet country roads and having our reunion with the river Annan for a short spell. The last part of this section of the Annandale Way is along tracks before we depart from the way for a few kilometres of road that take us to Johnstonebridge and the car park.
There are shops and toilets at the beginning of the walk and there are toilets available at the end in the community centre. Johnstonebridge motorway services are a very short drive from the car park where a more extensive range of food and beverages, as well as more toilets, are available. Cars will be parked at Lochmaben and at Johnstonebridge so sharing will be required. The walk will take about 5 hours so we should be at the end around 1500 – 1530.
