It is a circuit within and also outside the Longshaw Estate. Route will be Longshaw Visitor Centre (toilets), Wooden Pole, White Edge Lodge, Grouse Inn, Yarncliffe Wood, and back to Fox House beside Burbage Brook. Return buses from Fox House are 272, at 13.24 or 14.24. and 65 at 14.23 (after these there is nothing until after 4pm)
Longshaw is a lovely country estate on the fringes of the Peak District, and there are superb views at many points on this walk. It should be a relatively easy, starting on a familiar grassy path through Longshaw Estate towards Wooden Pole and White Edge Lodge. From there a narrow track is followed along the bottom of White Edge, to eventually reach the road near the Grouse Inn. The route next crosses fields to the edge of Yarncliffe Wood, and a track follows the cliff edge back into Longshaw again. At this point we are directly above the Totley Tunnel and Grindleford Station, and the railway line can be seen far below! Finally we descend to Burbage Brook and follow a delightful path upstream, crossing two footbridges. The last lap is uphill through woods to arrive back at Fox House. Most of the paths are good although there might be some muddy patches after heavy rain. There is one steep descent and a couple of stream crossings to negotiate, and there will be some cattle at some point. No hard hills and no stiles as remembered!
No dogs please.
