9:14 Manchester train to Guide Bridge (change at Romiley). Ashford Canal to Portland basin where three canals meet and terminate. We cross the River Tame to the Peak Forest Canal towpath then to Marple via the aqueduct and flight of locks.
The walk is pretty flat so a gentle introduction to the New Year.
Tickets are complicated. The cheapest option seems to be an advanced single to Guide Bridge and an advanced single from Marple but they can only be used on a specified train. Best to book on-line or at the station a few day in advance. Ordinary returns are simpler and it might be worth checking ordinary singles.
